When to visit Getting around Culture & customs Choosing your coast FAQs

When to visit

The short version

Zanzibar is a year-round destination with warm temperatures throughout. The most popular months are the drier seasons, while the wetter months are quieter and greener.

Dry seasons

The long dry season (roughly June to October) and the short dry season (around December to February) are the busiest and most popular times to visit, with plenty of sunshine.

Green seasons

The longer rains (around March to May) and short rains (around November) bring greener landscapes, fewer visitors and a slower pace. Rain often comes in short bursts rather than all day.

Our advice

Every season has trade-offs. Tell us your travel dates and what matters most to you, sunshine, quiet, value, or diving conditions, and we'll advise honestly on what to expect.

Getting around

Transfers

Most guests move around the island by private road transfer. Distances can be longer than they look on a map, and journeys depend on road conditions, which is exactly why we plan around geography.

On the water

Many experiences are reached by boat, from short hops to nearby islands to full-day sailing trips. Sea conditions and tides shape the timing of these days.

How we handle it

We arrange and coordinate your transfers and boat logistics as part of your itinerary, so you're not negotiating transport on the ground or losing time between activities.

Culture & customs

A Muslim-majority island

Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim society with a warm, welcoming culture. A little awareness goes a long way and is always appreciated by local communities.

Dress

On the beach and at resorts, normal beachwear is fine. Away from the beach, in Stone Town, villages and markets, modest dress that covers shoulders and knees is respectful and appreciated.

Respect

Ask before photographing people, especially in villages. During Ramadan, being discreet with eating and drinking in public during daylight is a considerate gesture.

How we help

Our guides are local and happy to help you navigate customs comfortably and respectfully, it's part of travelling well here.

Choosing your coast

The coasts differ

Zanzibar's beaches vary by tide, atmosphere and what's nearby. The north stays swimmable through the tides; the east has dramatic tidal shifts and a lagoon feel; the south is quieter and more remote.

Match it to your trip

The right beach depends on what you want, swimming at all tides, watersports, quiet, or easy access to particular experiences. There isn't one 'best' beach; there's the best one for you.
